Chapter 35 Sword Training
"Don\'t pretend you didn\'t see anything."
[Oh, I did see,] Sol replied, a hint of a smirk in his voice. [But it was your skill, Sensual Pheromone, that likely made her more… expressive. It\'s a passive skill, you know, and it activates when someone with high affection is nearby.]
"Oh, so she already had feelings for me?"
[Exactly. The skill just gave her the courage to act on it.] Sol\'s tone was matter-of-fact.
"Hmm," Arthur mused.
Lost in thought, he barely noticed as he arrived at the training grounds, where Adam was already seated, his eyes closed in calm meditation. Without even opening an eye, Adam spoke. "Took you long enough."
Arthur rubbed his neck awkwardly, mumbling, "Ha-ha, sorry"
Adam opened one eye and raised a brow. "Let\'s hope it\'s the last time. Now, pick up a sword and get over here."
Arthur nodded, grabbing a wooden training sword from the rack and stepping onto the field. Today was his first day training with mana, a power he\'d never had access to before. Until yesterday, his inability to wield mana had left him at the level of an elementary swordsman. But now, everything was about to change.n/o/vel/b//in dot c//om
As he stood opposite Adam, the air between them seemed charged with purpose.
"Alright, Arthur," Adam began, crossing his arms. "Let\'s start with drawing mana from within. Think of it like… tapping into a well. Mana flows within you, and by focusing, you can bring it to the surface and channel it into specific parts of your body."
Arthur nodded, closing his eyes, concentrating. He could feel a faint warmth in his chest, like a flickering flame that pulsed with life. Adam continued, his tone patient but firm.
"Find that core, Arthur. It should feel like… a heartbeat, almost. Once you\'re aware of it, imagine it flowing to your limbs, like blood. Your goal isn\'t to force it—just guide it. Keep it smooth, keep it steady."
Taking a deep breath, Arthur concentrated harder. He could feel a subtle, vibrating warmth within, and after a moment, he visualized it moving through his chest, down his arms, and pooling in his hands. He opened his eyes, almost startled at how quickly he\'d managed to focus his mana.
Adam\'s eyebrows rose in surprise. "Already? Most people struggle with that part for months. Maybe you\'re a natural at this after all." He grinned, but his surprise was genuine. "Now, try moving it into your legs."
With the same focus, Arthur directed the mana to his legs. The subtle warmth flowed downward, making him feel lighter, quicker, as though his legs were ready to spring into action. He took a step, marveling at the sudden ease in his movements.
Adam\'s approving smile turned mischievous. "Not bad, not bad. But let\'s see if you can keep it steady." Before Arthur could react, Adam gave him a light whack on the back of his knee with his own wooden sword. Arthur wobbled, nearly losing his balance.
"See? Gotta stay stable, little brother," Adam chuckled. "It\'s not enough to just feel the mana—you need to control it."
Arthur huffed, regaining his footing. "You could\'ve just said that."
"Sure, but where\'s the fun in that?" Adam smirked. "Alright, next, try infusing mana into your sword."
Adam demonstrated, and his wooden sword shimmered faintly as he channeled mana into it. "Mana infusion adds power, speed, and sharpness to your attacks. But you have to focus—too much, and you risk losing control." He held out his sword, the wood almost vibrating with the concentrated energy.
Arthur gave it a try, visualizing his mana moving into the sword. The blade in his hand began to glow, and he swung it, amazed at the intensified force behind his strike.
"Not bad," Adam commented. "But let\'s see if you can hold it." He stepped forward, whacking Arthur lightly on the shoulder with his own sword. "Gotta keep that infusion steady, or you\'ll lose the power halfway through a fight."
Arthur winced, rubbing his shoulder. "Is hitting me really necessary?"
"Oh, you\'ll thank me later," Adam grinned, not at all repentant. "Besides, it builds character."
With a sigh, Arthur adjusted his stance, focusing again to steady the mana in his weapon. He swung the sword, this time maintaining the power in each motion.
Adam clapped his hands, a pleased smile spreading across his face. "Excellent! Maybe you\'re a natural after all. Are you sure your class is mage and not swordsman?" he teased.
Arthur couldn\'t help but grin, a swell of pride building in his chest.
Adam\'s expression turned thoughtful as he continued, "Alright, let\'s take it up a notch. I planned to introduce advanced techniques next week, but since you\'re already so adept at channeling mana, there\'s no point in holding back." His eyes sparkled with anticipation. "Let\'s make the most of your talent—no time to waste."
"I want you to try a few basic maneuvers, but with mana-enhanced precision." Adam shifted into a stance, demonstrating a straightforward horizontal slash, his movements sharp and precise. "This is called the Clean Sweep—a fast, powerful cut meant to strike at the enemy\'s midsection. Keep your stance balanced, use your core, and move through the motion, like so."
Arthur watched closely, then mirrored Adam\'s stance, mana still flowing into his legs and arms. He swung his sword, feeling the enhanced weight and speed. The blade cut through the air in a graceful, controlled arc. With the infusion of mana, the strike felt like second nature, as if his body knew exactly what to do.
Adam observed, nodding approvingly. "That was nearly perfect for a first try. Now, try another technique—this one\'s called Piercing Fang. It\'s a thrusting move, designed to target your opponent\'s weak points directly. You\'ll need to channel mana precisely into the tip of your sword to make the thrust faster and more forceful."
Arthur adjusted his grip, directing his mana to the tip of his sword. Following Adam\'s instructions, he lunged forward with a sharp thrust, his blade moving faster than his usual limit. The power focused in the blade\'s tip made it feel like an extension of his own intent.
Adam grinned, giving him a hearty slap on the back. "Hey, look at you! Even the Piercing Fang on the first go. You\'re not supposed to be this good, you know. I might have to start taking you seriously."
Arthur grinned back, feeling proud of himself.
"Alright, I guess I can\'t go easy on you," Adam said, smirking. "How about a little movement technique? It\'s called Wind Step—think of it as a quick dodge. You just need a short burst of mana in your legs to give you that extra edge for sidesteps and quick turns. Watch me."
Adam shifted his weight, channeling a quick pulse of mana to his legs, and darted to the side in a quick burst. "Now you try."
Arthur followed suit, directing mana into his legs and dodging to the side, feeling a rush of exhilaration at the lightness in his limbs.
"Good! But let\'s keep practicing," Adam said, his voice playful again. "And maybe next time, don\'t look like you\'re about to trip over your own feet."
Arthur sighed. "Do you have to critique everything?"
"Of course," Adam said with a grin. "Older brother\'s privilege." He gave Arthur another light whack on the back as they continued.
The training continued, with Adam occasionally giving Arthur a teasing nudge or light tap whenever he got too confident, each playful jab reinforcing a lesson and, for Arthur, deepening the bond between them.
After a few hours, Arthur\'s muscles began to tire, though his mind remained alert and eager. He\'d absorbed a wealth of knowledge, and the bond with Adam had deepened through the shared training. Adam looked at him with a mixture of pride and amazement.
"Arthur, you\'ve got the potential to become an exceptional swordsman," Adam said, his tone more serious than before. "Keep training like this, and one day, you\'ll surpass even me."
